Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 March 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Football Grey/Aluminum/White. Football Grey and University Blue is the Air Jordan 1 Low in the colours that connect the shoe back to where Michael Jordan came from before Chicago. North Carolina is Jordan's own university and one of the college basketball programmes Jordan Brand carries, and a pale blue on a grey ground is that association stated without a logo. The low keeps the panel map Peter Moore drew for the shoe that reached the public on 1 April 1985, cut down so the colour blocks sit flat and read all at once. As a women's make it runs cooler and softer than the red heavy colourways, which suits the pairing: grey does the structure, blue does the accent, nothing shouts.
Recipe one, campus: light wash straight jeans with a single cuff, a grey hoodie and a navy jacket, letting the blue Swoosh pick up the jacket. Recipe two, soft neutral: cream trousers with a pale blue oxford or knit, ankles bare or in a low white sock, so the shoe finishes the outfit rather than punctuating it. Occasion is daytime and casual, spring through autumn. Fit is standard length in women's sizing, and the close low collar prefers a thin sock to avoid heel lift. Care: brush the grey panels dry, spray the blue overlays before first wear, and clean the white midsole promptly, because pale blue leather next to a greying midsole looks tired quickly.
Jordan Brand's college roster includes North Carolina, Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan, and university colours have become one of the ways the brand tells its own history in a palette rather than a slogan. Beyond campus, the line reached culture through basketball meeting hip hop: Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising, then 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carrying the shoes through music. Signed women's athletes include Maya Moore and Jordin Canada. A soft grey and blue low is the least confrontational version of all that, which is exactly why it gets worn: the reference is legible to anyone who knows and invisible to anyone who does not.
Leather and synthetic panels split grey and blue across toe, quarter and Swoosh, with a white midsole underneath. The low collar is padded and close cut, so the shoe sits under a hem rather than against it. Being the first model in the line, this predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered from the second shoe, so the ride comes from a stitched rubber cupsole and foam wedge: firm, stable, flat. Grey panels are the most forgiving surface in this palette and the university blue is the least, so protect the blue overlays first. The Wings mark on the collar and the Jumpman on the tongue place the shoe across two eras of house branding.
