Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 July 2021 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Deep Royal Blue/Iron Purple/White. Deep royal blue is the most confident colour the Air Jordan 1 wears without going near its original red and black story. On this women's Low SE, the blue takes the overlays and leaves a pale base to hold it, which is the arrangement that made the silhouette famous in the first place. Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and built an entire business around him, and the low cut version is where the shoe left the court for good: less ankle, less ceremony, more of a leather shoe than a basketball one. SE releases are where the women's line gets extra material or detailing, so this is the considered version rather than the standard issue.
Wear it with white wide leg jeans and a navy or striped top so the blue runs top to bottom and the outfit reads clean. Or pair it with a black midi dress and a denim jacket, where the royal blue picks up the denim and stops the shoe looking sporty. Right for daytime, campus, travel and casual offices, and strong in photographs because the colour holds under most light. Jordan 1 Lows fit true to length and snug across the toe box, so take your usual size. Clean the pale base immediately when it marks, and use a leather conditioner occasionally so the blue panels do not dry and crack.
The Air Jordan is the object that carried Nike from sports company to cultural institution. Spike Lee directed the advertising and appeared in it as Mars Blackmon, which put the shoe into film language, and hip hop turned it into a status marker rather than equipment. The women's SE releases are where the line now does its most interesting work, both commercially and visually. Nike's basketball authority is also structural: it has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and extended for a further twelve years in October 2024.
Leather panels with royal blue on the toe, eyestay, Swoosh and heel over a lighter base, so the panel edges do the drawing and the colour does the announcing. The low collar changes the wear: easier on and off, more ankle freedom, less padding to break in. Below is the classic arrangement of a foam midsole over a rubber outsole, and Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole that the brand made a visible design feature from 1987, is the cushioning idea the line rests on. Saturated blue leather keeps its depth if you keep it out of prolonged sunlight, which is the main thing to manage.
