Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 August 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Oxidized Green/Sail. Oxidized green is a colour named after a process rather than a thing, the verdigris that copper takes on when it is left outside long enough. Putting it on a women's Air Jordan 1 Retro Low OG is the sort of move the line earned the right to make once the silhouette stopped needing to justify itself on a court. Peter Moore designed the 1 with Bruce Kilgore, it sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars in sales, and everything since has been variations on a shape nobody wants to change. The Retro Low OG keeps the original panel geometry and the Wings mark of the earliest era, then dresses it in a colour the 1980s never offered.
Two recipes. First, faded blue denim with a white shirt, where green and indigo sit together the way they do on workwear and neither has to lead. Second, black trousers with a khaki utility jacket, an earth palette in which the shoe reads as the most saturated element. Lows suit warm weather, no show socks and wider feet, though the women's last runs narrow. Size true to length. Protect before first wear, keep the white midsole clean with a soft eraser rather than harsh cleaner, and store away from windows so the green holds its tone rather than drifting towards grey over a summer.
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that turned collecting into a mass activity, sitting on a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars, and it has hosted more collaborators than any other silhouette Jordan Brand makes: Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme, KAWS, Travis Scott's Cactus Jack releases. A women's Retro Low OG in an unusual colour is the quiet counterweight to all that, the version bought to wear. Jordan Brand, a Nike division since 1997, also carries WNBA athletes Maya Moore and Jordin Canada, so the women's commitment runs through the sport as well as the shelf.
Retro Low OG builds hold the original proportions rather than modernising them, so you get the 1985 panel breaks in a low cut, with Nike Air cushioning underfoot as it has been in the line since the second model. The women's last is narrower through the heel and midfoot, which changes the feel meaningfully on a low where there is no collar to hold you in. A muted green like this behaves well against dirt, sitting dark enough to absorb dust but light enough that a wet mark will show until it dries. Any white panelling beside it will yellow faster than the green fades. Brush first, wipe second, and keep it out of long sun exposure.
