Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 August 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White-Varsity Red. Satin on a basketball shoe follows a precedent the brand set decades ago, when the Air Jordan XI put patent leather on a court and made a performance model something people wore with suits. Satin does the same job on the 1: it takes a shape defined by tumbled leather and gives it a surface that catches light, which changes how the panel blocking reads entirely. Black Toe is the arrangement it borrows, one of the earliest Chicago era colour blocks, with black over the toe and heel and red and white carrying the rest. The result is the most formal version of a silhouette Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed in 1984.
A satin high top is an evening shoe pretending to be a sneaker. Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black silk or fine knit top and a well cut blazer, with the red panels doing the only colour work in the outfit. Recipe two: dark raw denim, a white shirt and a black leather jacket, a sharper night out fit where the satin picks up the light rather than the room. Black socks. High collar, so keep the trouser break just above it. These are not weather shoes or commuting shoes: keep them dry, store them in the box with paper in the toe, and expect to retire them earlier than a leather pair if you wear them hard.
The XI's patent leather is why nobody blinks at a satin Jordan now: once the brand demonstrated that formal materials could survive on a performance silhouette, the whole material vocabulary opened up. That opening was extended by the collaboration programme, with Dior, Comme des Garcons, Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Supreme and KAWS putting these shoes in front of audiences who judge them on material rather than on cushioning. The 1 keeps its original cultural credit underneath all of it: Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, records by 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and a collecting culture the shoe invented outright.
Satin panels on a Retro High build, which means the original collar height and panel breaks with a material that behaves nothing like leather. Satin does not crease the way leather does, it wrinkles and it snags, and a pulled thread on a satin panel is permanent in a way a scuff on leather is not. Handle it accordingly: no brushes with stiff bristles, no abrasive cleaners, and keep the pair away from velcro, rough denim seams and bag zips. The high collar is still firm out of the box and softens over a week. Flat rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle underneath, firm and close to the ground.
