Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 10 December 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 11 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Varsity Red. The Air Jordan XI is the model that put patent leather on a basketball court, and that single decision is why this shoe gets worn with a suit. Tinker Hatfield had already turned the line into a design series from the third model onward, but the XI went further and imported a material from formal wear into performance sport, which nobody had a reason to do. White with varsity red and black takes that construction and runs the brand's own house colours through it, so you get the most formal silhouette in the catalogue wearing the most recognisable palette in it. Few shoes carry two of a brand's signatures at once this clearly.
Use the formality it was built for. First: black tailored trousers with a white shirt and a dark jacket, the combination this model has been worn in since patent leather arrived on it, where the red is the only colour in the frame. Second: dark denim with a black crewneck, a simpler version for daytime that still respects the shine. Keep the hem short enough that the patent panel is visible, since hiding it defeats the point. Wipe patent with a dry microfibre cloth after every wear, clean the white upper with foam, avoid rain and grit, and store them boxed so the patent does not press against anything.
The XI is where the line's formal ambitions became explicit, and the culture followed. Air Jordan reached the mainstream through the collision of basketball and hip hop, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and with Spike Lee directing Nike's earliest advertising while playing Mars Blackmon on screen. This is the model that made it acceptable to wear a basketball shoe to something dressed. The luxury collaborations that came later, with Dior, Off-White under Virgil Abloh and Comme des Garcons, are downstream of a design decision made on this shoe decades before any of them.
Patent leather is the whole story here, so treat it correctly. It is a coated finish, which means it wipes clean easily but creases sharply and permanently at the flex point, and it scratches rather than scuffs. A microfibre cloth handles most marks; brushes and abrasive cleaners do not belong anywhere near it. The white upper above it is a separate problem and needs foam and a soft brush. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model, and later models added carbon fibre shank plates for torsional stiffness.
