Origin
Released on 28 September 2024 and part of the Hot Step 2 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Gunmetal/University Gold. The Hot Step is Nike's most obviously non athletic performance shoe, a basketball derived silhouette built under the NOCTA sub label with proportions that make no attempt to look like sports equipment. The second generation is where the shape settled into itself, and Black is the version that lets you read it as sculpture rather than as colour. Nike has been building product lines around individual figures since it signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and turned him into a business of his own, and NOCTA continues that pattern in a different discipline. What is unusual here is the restraint: a sub label release that arrives in a single flat colour and asks you to look at the outline.
Utility
All black gives you room to be heavy handed elsewhere. Recipe one: black cargo trousers stacked over the collar, an oversized black hoodie, a long coat, the full monochrome reading where only the outsole texture breaks the surface. Recipe two: dark washed denim, a grey heavyweight crewneck, black socks, which lightens it enough for daytime. Night, city and cold weather suit it. It is a bulky shoe, so give it wide legs rather than slim ones. Fit true to size with the collar laced properly. Clean the lugged outsole regularly because it traps grit, wipe the upper rather than soaking it, and store away from direct heat.
Influence
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models becoming staples of mainstream American youth dress, then reappearing in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Nike's relationship with music has not always been so orderly. The unauthorised 1987 use of the Beatles' Revolution triggered a lawsuit from Apple Records and the ads were pulled in March 1988. A sub label built with a musician is the current, negotiated version of that relationship, where the artist is a partner in the product rather than a licence dispute.
Construction
A high cut silhouette with a heavily built upper and a distinctive treaded outsole with an aggressive lug pattern, which is what separates the Hot Step from every other basketball adjacent Nike shape. In black, the texture of that outsole and the volume of the upper are the only things you can read, since there is no colour blocking to break it up. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole and the company's cushioning platform since the 1987 Air Max, sits underneath. This is a heavy shoe on foot with a substantial collar, so expect a break in and expect it to sit high under a trouser hem. Black hides scuffing better than any other finish on this much surface.
