Released on 1 October 2023 and part of New Balance's 2002R line. This release has a suede upper in Sandstone/Turtledove/Gold Metallic. The 2002R sits on New Balance's premium running shelf, the same shelf that made grey suede a status colour rather than a default. Sandstone plays that history in a desert key: a warm, dusty upper that looks less like a mid-2000s tech runner and more like one recovered from a dig. That is the Protection Pack idea. Where a standard 2002R is finished clean, this treatment leaves the shoe looking stripped and weathered, structure exposed instead of capped, standing in for years of wear you never put in. It works because the brand's power was always plainness. New Balance spent decades building running shoes nobody called fashionable, so when fashion arrived the archive was already full of shapes worth pulling forward and roughing up.
