Origin
Released on 12 October 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Grey/White. The 9060 is New Balance reading its own archive and exaggerating it. It takes the visual grammar of the 99x runners, the shoes that turned suburban grey into a cultural object, and swells the midsole and the panel lines into something closer to sculpture. Grey White is the version that makes the argument most clearly, because grey is the colour the brand's reputation is built on. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, and this shoe borrows that neutrality while abandoning its restraint. You get the ordinary colour and an extraordinary shape, which is why the 9060 became a way to wear New Balance without looking like you were wearing a running shoe.
Utility
Pair it with wide leg grey flannel or heavy ecru cotton trousers, a white tee and a soft grey overshirt, so the whole outfit sits in one tonal family and the silhouette carries the interest. Alternatively go high contrast: black tapered trousers cropped just above the ankle, a black knit, and let the grey and white shoe be the only light in the fit. The tall midsole wants trousers that stop cleanly rather than pooling. It is a walking and standing shoe for long city days, not a gym shoe. Construction
The upper mixes mesh with suede and synthetic overlays across a heavily panelled build, greys layered at different depths against off white so the seams read as line work rather than just construction. Underfoot New Balance uses ABZORB, its foam and rubber polymer blend engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels into the knees and hips, and the exaggerated midsole geometry gives that foam more volume to work with. The result is a soft, tall ride with a lot of stack visually and a lot of forgiveness underfoot. It is not a stability shoe.
