Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 July 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Bordeaux/White/Metallic Silver. Bordeaux is a wine tone, and putting it on an Air Jordan 1 High Golf is one of the most self assured moves in the catalogue. The golf line exists because Jordan Brand outgrew basketball entirely after becoming a standalone Nike division in 1997, expanding across leagues and sponsorships including the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. The shoe itself is still the 1985 silhouette Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore, cut high and mounted on a golf outsole. A deep red brown is a country club colour, so this is the shape arriving on the course dressed for it. Style code DQ0660 103.
Two uses, one on grass and one off it. On course: stone or cream golf trousers with a clean break, a white or grey quarter zip, a brown belt matching the upper; bordeaux against green is the easiest colour relationship in this whole line. Off course: dark denim, a cream knit and a wool overshirt, wearing them as a heritage looking boot alternative. Fit is true to size with a secure midfoot. Care: clear soil from the traction outsole before it dries, brush the upper dry, condition the leather so the wine tone stays deep, and dry them naturally rather than near heat.
The Air Jordan 1's reputation was built on breaking a dress code. The Banned advertising ran on the NBA's uniform rule that shoes be at least 51 percent white, with a 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike paid rather than redesign, and it taught the market that transgression sells. Golf is the most rule bound clothing environment in sport, so the same silhouette on a course is the argument repeated in a new room. Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete of the line, signed in 1984 and still receiving royalties, and the golf category is the part of the brand that follows his own life after basketball.
The upper follows the 1 High: wing tip toe with perforations, a separate eyestay, a stitched Swoosh panel and a high collar carrying the Wings mark from the earliest era of the line. The sole is a golf traction outsole rather than a flat rubber cupsole, built to hold a stance through a swing on soft ground, which also means it is the wrong shoe for polished indoor floors. A bordeaux upper is unusually forgiving outdoors: grass marks and damp show far less than they do on white golf shoes, which is a real argument for the colour beyond taste.
