Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 April 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Cement Grey/White/Fire Red. Black, light smoke grey and gym red is the Chicago palette moved one step toward the street: red is still present but demoted to an accent, and grey takes the space white usually holds. On the Low, the version of the model with the collar removed, that softening makes sense. The 1 was drawn in 1984 as a basketball shoe for a rookie Nike hoped would give it a face in a sport it was losing to Converse and adidas. Four decades of use later, the grey and black reading is what the shoe looks like when it has stopped arguing and settled into daily rotation.
Grey and black is the easiest Jordan palette to dress around. Charcoal trousers, a grey sweatshirt and a black jacket makes a tonal fit where the gym red is the only colour in the frame. Or wear it with light wash jeans and a white tee, where the grey stops the shoe from looking stark. It suits commuting and long walking days because the low cut does not rub. Cuff the hem so the panel breaks are visible. Brush dust off regularly rather than deep cleaning occasionally, keep the midsole wiped, and rotate the pair so the vamp crease develops gradually.
The 1's authority is inherited rather than argued. It came from a shoe whose first 50,000 pairs sold out and which passed 150 million dollars against a plan for three million over three years, from Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon campaigns, and from a hip hop generation that treated Jordans as a reference point. Muted general releases like this one are where that authority is spent day to day, in a market where the rarest 1985 pairs have reached about 20,000 dollars on StockX while the wearable versions stay reachable. That gap is the whole reason the line still functions at scale.
The Low is the simplest expression of the 1's panel build, with toe cap, eyestay, quarter and Swoosh stitched as separate pieces and no collar padding to add bulk. Underfoot is a flat rubber cupsole, firm and low, since the 1 predates Nike Air in the line, which arrived with the Air Jordan 2. Perforations sit across the toe box. Grey is the most practical of the three tones here because it hides light scuffing that shows immediately on white, but it also dulls with dust, so a dry brush every few wears keeps the tone true. Clean red panels separately to avoid transfer.
