Designed by Peter Moore and released on 31 October 2018 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White. Tuxedo is black and white pretending to be formalwear, and the Air Jordan line has a real claim to that territory. The Air Jordan XI put patent leather on a basketball court, dropping an evening shoe material into performance equipment, and it is the reason that model still gets worn with suits. A Retro Mid named Tuxedo is the Air Jordan 1 borrowing the same idea, taking the silhouette Peter Moore drew for a Chicago Bulls rookie in 1984 and dressing it for a different room. The Mid cut is the practical choice for it, sitting high enough to look intentional under a trouser hem without the full commitment of a high top.
Monochrome earns you freedom everywhere else. Black tailored trousers with a white shirt worn open and a black knit is the version that reads deliberately formal rather than accidental. The second recipe is casual inversion: white or cream wide leg trousers with a black tee, the shoe bridging both halves. Avoid brown leather accessories, which fight a true black and white palette. Mid cut takes a cropped trouser well. Keep white panels and the midsole clean on a schedule, use a soft brush and mild soap only, and store boxed away from sunlight, since white materials yellow with light exposure and it is not reversible.
Jordan Brand's move into formal registers has been validated from outside, most obviously through its collaboration with Dior, alongside Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. Those partnerships confirmed that a basketball silhouette could sit in a luxury context without irony. Underneath is the older history, the one where the league's uniform rule demanded court shoes be at least 51 percent white, Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built the Banned advertising around it. A black and white Air Jordan 1 sits at the exact intersection of those two stories, the rule and the room it was never meant to enter.
Black and white blocking is the most legible way to build a shoe, because the panel breaks are the design and there is nowhere to hide a sloppy line. On the Mid, the collar clears the ankle bone without the High's full wrap and folds forward once broken in, which on a two tone pair changes the balance of the shoe visibly as it ages. Nike Air cushioning has been part of this line since the Air Jordan II. The white sections and midsole set the entire maintenance schedule here: clean them weekly rather than occasionally, because grey creep on white is what makes a monochrome shoe look tired long before it wears out.
