Released on 3 December 2023 and part of the I BASKETBALL line. This release has a knit upper in Carbon/Sesame/Carbon. This is adidas basketball filtered through Fear of God Athletics, and the Carbon colourway is the most severe reading of it. adidas has been on court since the Superstar arrived in 1969 with its moulded rubber shell toe, a shoe reportedly worn by more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973. That history matters here because the Fear of God Athletics basketball shoe is an argument about what a basketball shoe looks like when you remove the noise: no team colours, no sponsor logic, no graphics competing for attention. Carbon is the colourway that commits hardest to that idea, a single dark grey tone carried across the whole shoe so that shape and proportion are the only things left to look at.
First recipe: full grey, wide pleated trousers, a heavy tonal hoodie, and the shoe finishing the column of colour rather than breaking it. Second: hard contrast, black tailored trousers cropped at the ankle with a cream knit, letting the carbon grey sit as the only mid tone in the outfit. It works for gallery hours, long travel days and dressed down evenings where you want height and volume without a bright sneaker. Size true, and take the fit seriously through the ankle: this silhouette is built to be held, not floated in. adidas basketball has two audiences that rarely overlap, and this shoe is aimed at the one that came from fashion. The Superstar taught the brand that a court shoe can be adopted wholesale by people who never play, and the shell toe became the brand's most copied silhouette detail for exactly that reason. The Fear of God Athletics partnership is the current version of the same trade: performance geometry, styled with the restraint of a wardrobe piece. The tonal grey treatment is the construction story as much as the materials are. When a basketball shoe is finished in one colour, every panel seam, every overlay edge and the transition from upper to midsole become the visual detail, which is why this style photographs like a sculpture and wears like a uniform piece. The Three Stripes were originally stitched on to reinforce the upper, and adidas has kept that structural instinct in its court shoes, where lateral containment is the whole point. Expect a build that prioritises a locked heel and a stable base over cushioning theatre. In a colour this uniform, scuffs read immediately, so a soft brush and a light suede or nubuck safe cleaner should be part of ownership rather than an afterthought.
