Released on 30 November 2022 and part of adidas's NMD_S1 line. This release has a knit upper in Ambient Sky/Crew Navy/Altered Blue. The NMD is the shoe that proved adidas could build a modern silhouette people would queue for without raiding the archive, and it did that on the back of Boost. Boost launched in adidas running in 2013 as a thermoplastic polyurethane developed with the German chemical company BASF, and the NMD took that midsole out of the running category and into everyday wear. The S1 is the line's most sculptural evolution, and Ambient Sky is a pale, atmospheric colourway that suits it: soft, cool and slightly synthetic looking, which is honest for a shoe whose entire appeal is engineered rather than heritage.
First recipe: technical layers in grey and black with tapered trousers, so the sculpted midsole reads as intentional rather than accidental. Second: wide light denim with a plain white tee, letting the pale sky palette sit as the coolest thing in the outfit. Good for travel, long days on foot and city wear where cushioning genuinely matters, since Boost is a comfort argument first. Buy true to size and expect a snug entry given the sock like construction typical of the family. Clean the midsole regularly, air them out after long wear, and store away from direct light to slow discolouration.
The NMD arrived when sneaker culture had moved from retro reissues to engineered silhouettes, and it became a status shoe on the strength of its midsole rather than a story. That is unusual for adidas, whose cultural weight normally comes from the past: from Jesse Owens in 1936, from the Superstar's dominance of 1970s courts, from the Superstar being adopted by hip hop and giving the brand a second life it did not design. The S1 continues the engineered lineage, with collaborative editions like this one aimed at buyers who follow design language and release cadence rather than sport.
Boost is the reason this shoe feels the way it does. It is made from thousands of fused TPU pellets, and the bounce comes from how the material is processed rather than from the raw polymer, which is why it returns more energy than standard EVA foam and behaves more consistently across temperatures. On the S1 that midsole is exaggerated into part of the silhouette rather than hidden under an upper. Boost midsoles do discolour over time, especially in white and pale tones, so keep them out of prolonged sun, clean the midsole with a soft brush and mild solution, and never use bleach based whiteners which will yellow the foam faster than the dirt would.
