Origin
Released on 1 September 2024 and part of the Terrex Free Hiker line. This release has a textile upper in Wonder Beige/Core Black/Semi Impact Orange. Terrex is where adidas points its engineering at ground it cannot control. The Free Hiker 2 is the company applying running architecture to a hiking boot: a soft collar, a foot hugging upper and a walking shoe's rhythm, rather than the stiff leather box that dominated the category for decades. That instinct traces straight back to Adi Dassler, who built purpose specific shoes for individual events instead of one shoe for everything. This Cold.RDY GORE-TEX build is the cold and wet specification of that idea, and the Wonder Beige base with black and orange sets it up as a boot that reads as outdoor kit rather than technical uniform. The three angled bars, the performance mark adidas introduced in 1997, are the badge that belongs on it.
Utility
Two builds. Wet season commuting: cuffed dark denim or a technical trouser stacked slightly on the collar, a fleece midlayer and a shell, letting the beige upper break up a dark fit. Or actual trail use: merino socks, a softshell trouser cinched at the ankle, and a pack, where the Cold.RDY lining earns its place on early starts. Size with the sock you will actually wear, because a thick winter sock eats half a size in a boot cut this close. Lace firmly through the top eyelets on descents to stop your toes hitting the front. Rinse mud off with cool water rather than scrubbing dry dirt into the fabric, dry them away from direct heat, and reproof the outer with a wash in wash in treatment once water stops beading on the surface.

adidas is the second largest sportswear company in the world, and Terrex is where it argues with specialist outdoor brands on their own ground. The cultural shift the Free Hiker rode is simple: waterproof hiking boots stopped being equipment you changed out of and became things people wear through a city winter, worn with technical outerwear that never sees a summit. That crossover is real and adidas designs for it, giving the boot a sock like ease that survives a train platform as well as a trail. Nothing about this shoe leans on a celebrity story. It is the performance side of the company, working under the Badge of Sport rather than the Trefoil.
Construction
Two named systems carry this build. The GORE-TEX membrane sits between the upper and the lining, blocking liquid water from coming in while letting vapour from your foot escape, which is the difference between a boot that stays dry and one that soaks from the inside. Cold.RDY is adidas's cold weather package, tuned to hold warmth without turning the boot into an oven on the climb. The mid cut collar closes around the ankle to keep grit and snowmelt out, and the Wonder Beige upper is the panel that will show trail dirt first. Treat the orange as a visibility accent, which is what bright hits on outdoor footwear are for.
