adidas Yeezy 350 V2 CMPCT Slate Panda
adidas Yeezy 350 V2 CMPCT Slate Panda
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 2 June 2023 as part of the Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Slate White/Slate White/Slate White. CMPCT is the compressed edit of the 350 V2, a stripped version of the silhouette that arrived late in the model's life and reads cleaner and lower key than the original. Slate Panda is its black and white treatment, the two tone knit that the sneaker world has long shorthanded as panda. Where most of the line was named after terrain, Pirate Black, Oxford Tan, Moonrock, this one is named after contrast itself. Pairs like this reached shelves through the sell through of remaining inventory after adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022, which is part of why the CMPCT run feels like a postscript to the 350 story rather than a new chapter of it.
Utility
Two tone black and white is the most forgiving thing you can put on your feet, which is the whole appeal. Recipe one: black wide leg trousers, a white heavyweight tee and a black bomber, where the shoe closes a monochrome fit without breaking it. Recipe two: mid blue straight leg denim with a cream crewneck, where the black sections ground a soft palette. It handles office adjacent dress codes better than the louder colourways. Take your normal size, since Primeknit stretches into the foot over the first few wears. White knit sections pick up dirt quickly, so brush them dry after wearing and treat marks immediately with cold water rather than letting them set. Keep the Boost midsole out of bleach based cleaners, which yellow it.
Influence
Black and white knit runners became one of the defining sneaker looks of the era, and the 350 V2 is a large part of why. This is the silhouette that turned limited release footwear into a mainstream event, with queue culture, bot buying and a resale economy built around it. By the time CMPCT versions appeared, the drop machine had already stopped: adidas ended the partnership on 25 October 2022, stating that recent comments and actions by founder Kanye West were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values, and later sold through what stock remained. Treat Slate Panda as an artefact of that wind down rather than as current product.
Construction
The upper is Primeknit, one machine knitted piece with no cut and sewn panels, worked here in a two tone pattern so the black and white sections transition inside the knit rather than at a seam. The CMPCT treatment simplifies the surface of the shoe, which puts the emphasis on the knit texture and the profile. Below it sits adidas Boost, the expanded TPU pellet foam that gives the 350 family its bounce and its speckled midsole face, with a rubber outsole for traction. There is no visible logo, no printed branding and nothing on the exterior naming the maker, which has been the model's identifying trick since the beginning.
