Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 23 December 2020 as part of the Yeezy Quantum line. This release has the Frozen Blue colourway. The Qntm is the most technical looking shape the line produced, a high volume silhouette built from stacked and layered components rather than the single knit sock that made the 350 famous. It came from the later part of the adidas period, when the brand was confident enough to move away from the earth toned minimalism it had started with and towards something more engineered. Frozen Blue is a cold, pale icy tone that suits that direction, reading closer to a rendered object than to a shoe. It is a long way from Oxford Tan and Turtle Dove, which is exactly the distance the line had travelled. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022, so this is archive product.
Utility
A tall, pale, technical shoe needs simple volume around it. Recipe one: black or grey wide leg track trousers with a plain hoodie, so the shoe reads as part of a sporty outfit without needing another accent. Recipe two: dark denim with a white tee and a navy shell jacket, where the icy blue tone links to the jacket and keeps the outfit cool throughout. Avoid slim tapered trousers, which fight the volume. Take your usual size and expect a supportive, enclosed fit. Clean the layered edges with a soft brush and foam cleaner, work carefully into the joins, avoid soaking the shoe, and dry indoors at room temperature away from sunlight.
Influence
By the time the Qntm arrived, Yeezy had already reshaped how sneakers are sold. The scarcity model of limited releases on announced dates produced queue culture, bot buying and a resale economy that set prices well above retail, and the line was generating roughly two billion dollars a year for adidas, described by Forbes in 2020 as one of the great retail stories of the century. That scale is what allows a brand to release a shape this unusual without a logo on it. Kanye West founded and designed the line, and adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022 after his antisemitic public remarks, which the company called unacceptable, hateful and dangerous.
Construction
The Qntm is assembled from layered structural components rather than a single knitted piece, which gives it height, volume and a defined shape that holds when the shoe is off the foot. As with everything else in the range there is no logo on the exterior, so the layering itself has to carry the identity. In a cold pale tone the joins and edges read as shadow lines and the shoe looks moulded rather than stitched. Expect more support and a more enclosed feel than the knit models offer, along with more weight. Pale cold tones show scuffing at the exposed edges first, so the parts that mark are the parts you will notice.
