Culture Note™
Released on 1 June 2022 and part of the Adilette 22 line. This release has a synthetic upper. The Adilette 22 is adidas rethinking the slide as an object rather than as a strap over a footbed. Where the original Adilette was the shoe you changed into after a match, the 22 is sculpted, chunky and deliberately strange, a moulded form that looks more like a design study than a locker room staple. That willingness to make the odd choice has form at adidas: the company marketed the adidas 1 in 2005 as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor performing five million calculations a second to adjust cushioning. Magic Lime pushes it further, a high frequency yellow green that makes no attempt to be neutral and turns the slide into the loudest thing you own.
Two ways. Sport recovery: black track pants with a taped side stripe, a white crew sock and an oversized tee, where the lime pops against the black without competing. Or summer: light shorts, a plain white or grey tee and bare feet, letting the sculpted form be the only detail. Right for pools, gyms, beaches, festivals and the walk to get food. Wrong for long distances or slick indoor floors, since a chunky moulded sole does not reward speed. Moulded slides fit generously and should sit snug over the instep with your toes clear of the front edge, so size down if you are between. Rinse with fresh water after pool or sea use, clean the footbed with mild soap, and dry out of direct sun so the colour holds.
Slides moved out of the changing room and into everyday dress through football and hip hop, worn with socks as a finishing move rather than as an afterthought, and adidas was holding the definitive shape when that happened. It is the same pattern as the Superstar being taken up by hip hop off its own initiative, or the terrace shoes being adopted by football casuals: adidas supplies the object and a culture decides what it means. The Adilette 22 belongs to the newer wave, where recovery footwear and sculptural foam pieces are worn on purpose rather than out of necessity, and a lime pair is the version that admits it wants to be seen.
This is a moulded slide, so the shape and the cushioning are the same object. The footbed is contoured with a raised edge and a scooped centre so your foot locates itself without a strap doing all the work, and the thick, textured sole gives the shoe its visual bulk and its grip. There is no lining to wear out and no stitching to fail, which is why moulded slides survive pool, shower and beach use better than anything constructed. In Magic Lime the surface reflects a lot of light, so you see the sculpting clearly, and the tradeoff is that a bright green picks up dirt in the footbed sooner than a dark tone would.
