Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 24 September 2023 as part of Nike's Air Huarache line. This release has a neoprene upper in Black/Black/White/Medium Grey/Black. The Air Huarache was Nike arguing that a shoe could be built around the foot rather than assembled over it, and the result looked less like footwear and more like equipment when it arrived. That thinking, hold the foot with as little material as possible, is the same idea Nike later formalised in Flywire, where cables do the securing so the upper can almost disappear. Black Iridescent takes the model's exposed structure and finishes it in a shifting oil slick sheen that changes with the light, so a shape people already recognise gets a surface they have not seen on it. Style code FD0656 001 identifies the pairing. It is the archive model treated as a material study.
Iridescence on black wants darkness around it so the sheen registers. Wear it with black technical trousers and a black shell jacket for a night look where the shoe shifts colour under streetlights, or with dark indigo denim and a charcoal knit for a daytime version that keeps things subtle. It suits evenings, gigs and city wear, and it is wasted in bright flat daylight. The Huarache fits snugly through the heel with a stretch entry, so try it on rather than guessing, and go up half a size if you have a high instep. Clean with a soft damp cloth only, avoid brushes on the coated finish, and keep it out of prolonged sun.
The Huarache belongs to the period when Nike's design language got strange and confident at once, and it landed in a culture already primed to read sneakers as clothing: from the 1980s the brand's models had become status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion and then staples of mainstream American youth dress, before returning through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Iridescent finishes push that further, because a shifting surface is a fashion idea rather than a performance one. It is the same instinct behind Nike's work with artists, including Takashi Murakami, where the product becomes a surface for someone else's language.
The Huarache's structure is its selling point: a supportive frame around a close fitting inner, so the shoe holds your foot through the heel and midfoot rather than through stiff panelling. That makes it easy to get on and forgiving through a long day, and it means fit is more about volume than about length. The iridescent finish here is a surface treatment, which is the part to protect, because coated finishes scuff differently from leather and cannot be polished back. Nike Air remains the cushioning language underneath, the pressurised gas unit that has been part of the brand's midsoles since the 1987 Air Max made it a visible design feature.
