Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 4 March 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Tech Grey/Black/Fire Red. White Cement is one of the load bearing colour stories in the whole line, because the grey cracked elephant print that defines it was introduced on the Air Jordan III and now signals the brand on its own with no logo needed. Putting it on a golf make of the Air Jordan 4 is a specific kind of move: it takes the most recognisable material code the brand owns and walks it onto a fairway. Jordan Brand has been expanding outside basketball for a while, taking the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, and golf is the version of that expansion aimed at individuals rather than teams.
Two ways to wear it. On the course, keep the fit disciplined: stone or white technical trousers, a plain polo, and the cement grey panels doing the only pattern work in the outfit. Off the course, White Cement is the easiest palette in the line to style, working with washed denim, grey sweats or black trousers equally. Do not use a turf outsole as a street sole, because that traction wears down fast on pavement and cannot be replaced. Clean grass and soil out immediately after play, dry at room temperature away from heat, and treat the white panels before they stain rather than after.
Elephant print is the brand's most portable idea. Tinker Hatfield introduced it on the Air Jordan III, along with the Jumpman on the tongue, a mark created after Peter Moore had Jordan recreate a pose in Bulls gear, which Nike successfully defended when Jacobus Rentmeester sued in 2015 and the Ninth Circuit ruled for Nike in February 2018. That print now carries the brand into categories basketball never reached. The wider culture behind it came from Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising and from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing the shoes, and it followed the brand onto every surface it has since tried.
The build is a 4 pattern adapted for turf: the same panelled upper and midfoot structure, sitting on a course specific outsole designed for grip through a swing rather than on a hardwood floor. That change matters more than any other detail, because it makes this a shoe you should not be walking on concrete in. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the Air Jordan II and remains underfoot here. White uppers with grey cement panels are the highest maintenance surface the brand makes, so a protector spray before the first round and a habit of cleaning after every round are not optional if you want it to stay white.
