Culture Note™
The Air Jordan 4 belongs to the Tinker Hatfield era, the run that began at the Air Jordan III and turned a signature basketball shoe into a design series with its own vocabulary. Where the 1 was a leather court shoe, the 4 is engineered: a visible performance platform, structural detailing across the upper and a silhouette that has aged into one of the most recognisable in the catalogue. Midnight Navy takes that architecture into deep blue, a colour with none of the Chicago palette's urgency and all of the model's presence. It is the version that reads as considered rather than loud, and navy sits closer to the way the 4 is actually worn now, which is off court and in cities.
Navy is the easiest strong colour to dress around. Recipe one: grey sweatpants cuffed at the ankle, a navy hoodie and a black puffer, where the shoe closes a cold weather palette without adding contrast. Recipe two: dark straight jeans, a cream knit and a tan jacket, letting the navy read as the formal end of a casual outfit. Navy, grey or black socks, never white against this upper. The 4's bulk needs a trouser with enough width to sit over the collar without stacking. This is the pair for long days on foot given the Air cushioning, but keep it out of standing water and clean salt off promptly in winter.
The Hatfield models are the reason Jordan could become a standalone Nike division in 1997 rather than remaining a single endorsement line. That division now runs a roster across sports, from Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson and Luka Doncic in the NBA to Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott in the NFL, and it moved into football entirely with Paris Saint Germain in 2018. The 4 also sits at the centre of the brand's collaboration history: Travis Scott's Cactus Jack work covers the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, which is a large part of why this silhouette carries the resale weight it does.
A performance built upper in midnight navy over a mid height support structure, with the panel detailing that gives the 4 its shape and the lacing architecture that lets you tune the fit across the midfoot. Nike Air cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II, and it is what makes the 4 a materially more comfortable long wear shoe than the 1, which runs on a flat court board. Navy hides urban grime better than any pale makeup but shows salt and water rings, so blot rather than rub. On any aged pair, check the midsole before hard wear: polyurethane degrades by hydrolysis over time, and Nike has not published which formulation it uses.
