Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 26 April 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Hyper Violet. The Air Jordan 4 belongs to Tinker Hatfield, who took over the line from the Air Jordan III onward and turned a basketball shoe into a design series with its own language. Where the 1 was a leather high top, the 4 was engineered: netting, plastic hardware and a lace system you could adjust to your own foot. Hyper Violet puts that structure in a bright purple, a colour that has no connection to the Chicago palette and does not want one, which is exactly why it works on the 4. This is the model where Jordan Brand has always been most willing to run saturated, non team colour, because the panel breaks are complex enough to carry it.
Two ways in. Loud and deliberate: black or charcoal wide leg trousers, a plain black hoodie, and no other colour anywhere, so the purple does all the work. Or soften it: grey sweatpants stacked over the collar, a white tee and a grey crewneck, which lets the violet read as a highlight in a monochrome fit. The 4 sits close to true to size and runs a little snug over a high instep, so use the lace wings rather than overtightening. Brush the netting dry, spot clean the panels with mild soap, and keep the midsole clean because on a chunky sole it is the largest single surface people see.
The Air Jordan 4 is one of the two models Travis Scott has worked on for Cactus Jack, alongside the 1 and the 6, which put the silhouette at the centre of the modern collaboration economy. It sits inside a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars, driven by a collecting culture the Air Jordan line invented. Jordan Brand's design side has also handed its models to Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. A bright, non team colourway of the 4 is aimed squarely at that audience: people who read the silhouette first and the colour second, and know the difference between a retro and a concept.
The 4's character comes from its parts: mesh netting set into the side quarters for airflow, plastic lace wings on either side that let you dial the lockdown, a moulded heel counter and a wide, blocky midsole. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the Air Jordan II, and on the 4 that cushioning sits under a chunkier, more supportive platform than anything on the 1. Hyper Violet is applied across the upper panels with the netting and hardware carrying the contrast. Purple this saturated will fade in strong sun, so store them in the dark, and clean the netting with a soft brush rather than a cloth, which snags.
