Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 4 May 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a leather upper in Off White/Military Blue/Neutral Grey. This is the grade school make of Military Blue, and grade school is where the Air Jordan story tends to actually begin for most people. The fourth model belongs to Tinker Hatfield's run, the point from the third model onward when the line became a design series with its own codes rather than a basketball shoe that changed colour each year. Military blue on a neutral upper is the palette that has followed this model longest. Sized for a younger foot, it does the job the brand has depended on since 1984: put a shape loaded with meaning onto someone who has not yet learned the meaning, and let the shoe teach them.
Recipe one, school standard: dark straight jeans or navy trousers with a plain hoodie and a jacket, so the blue detailing on the shoe does the work. Recipe two, sport: grey sweatpants and a plain tee with a windbreaker, socks crew height and white. Occasion is daily wear, school runs, weekends, cold weather; this model gives more coverage than a low. Fit is grade school sizing, roomy in the toe box, and the lace cage helps if the foot is narrow. Care: teach the wearer to brush the pale panels dry before water, keep the midsole clean weekly, air dry away from radiators, and rotate pairs so the upper has time to recover its shape.
Air Jordan reached culture through basketball meeting hip hop, with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon in the earliest advertising and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes. The fourth model is also one of three silhouettes Travis Scott has worked on under Cactus Jack, alongside the 1 and the 6, which keeps demand high across every size run. There is a documented darker chapter too: in the late eighties the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them, a piece of history worth knowing when the shoe in question is a school shoe.
A neutral upper with military blue on the structural panels, built on the fourth model's eyelet hardware, which takes the lacing off the upper so tension can be set in zones. That system is genuinely useful on a growing foot, because you can hold the midfoot without crushing the toes. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model, so this is a softer platform than the first shoe's flat cupsole and better suited to full school days. Grade school sizing runs on a smaller last and the sizes are not interchangeable with adult numbering, so measure rather than assume. The pale upper will show wear before the blue does.
