Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 27 March 2022 as part of Nike's Air Max 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Sail/Cargo Khaki/Mineral Clay. Air Max Day is Nike's annual celebration of the line that began in 1987, when the company cut a window into a midsole and let people see the pressurised gas unit that had been hidden inside its shoes, turning cushioning into a design feature. This Premium release marks that occasion with a Wabi Sabi treatment, the Japanese idea that finds beauty in imperfection, wear and asymmetry. Applying it to the Air Max 1 is a pointed choice: this is the shoe where the whole visible Air idea started, and Wabi Sabi is the argument that a thing does not have to be flawless to be finished. It is a philosophy, applied to a sneaker that made its name on engineering.
A deliberately imperfect shoe wants a settled outfit. Wear it with washed cream or stone wide trousers and an undyed heavy tee, so the raw edges and uneven tones look intentional. For an autumn version, pair with brown corduroy and a natural coloured knit, letting the shoe's texture sit inside a textural fit. Avoid crisp technical clothing, which makes the finish look like a fault. This is an everyday walking sneaker, not a running one, and the slim last means try your usual size with a thin sock. Do not try to clean it back to new: brush gently, spot treat, and let the wear accumulate, because that is what the design is for.
Air Max models joined Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as the shoes that carried Nike from sport into urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s, then into 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure dressing, and the Air Max 1 is the origin point of that whole family. Nike marks the anniversary every year because the line is one of the few places where its engineering and its cultural standing are the same story. A concept release built around imperfection is the brand allowing its most technical achievement to be treated as an art object rather than as a spec sheet.
A Wabi Sabi themed build leans on imperfection as a design device, which typically means mismatched panels, raw or exposed edges, uneven tones and materials chosen for how they age rather than how they photograph new. That reverses the usual premium logic, where a Premium tag means finer leather and cleaner finishing. Under the upper is the Air Max 1 platform, a foam midsole with the visible Nike Air unit in the heel and a waffle influenced rubber outsole descended from Bill Bowerman's original waffle iron experiment. The Air Max 1 last runs slim and low volume with a firmer ride than modern foams. Expect the shoe to look better after six months than it does out of the box.
