Air Max 90 sneakers
Air Max 90 sneakers

Origin
The Air Max line began in 1987 with a simple, radical decision: cut a window into the midsole and let people see the Air unit. Nike Air is a pressurised gas capsule sealed into the foam, and making it visible turned an engineering component into the whole visual identity of a shoe. The 90 is the generation that took that idea and made it graphic, with bold panel breaks and a large exposed unit at the heel, and it became one of the most reissued patterns Nike owns. Style code IM4613 identifies this make-up. It is a running shoe by origin and a street shoe by every measure that has mattered since.
Utility
Recipe one: straight-leg jeans with a slight break over the toe, a plain crew and a bomber, which is the shoe's default habitat and lets the heel unit sit visible from the side. Recipe two: grey track pants with a windbreaker in one of the shoe's accent tones, the sportswear reading, where the Air Max panelling gives the fit its structure. Air Max 90s fit close through the midfoot, so wide feet should go up half a size. Keep the visible Air window clean with a soft damp cloth and no solvent. Brush the mesh dry, avoid the washing machine entirely, and store away from heat, which is what actually damages a sealed Air unit.
Influence
From the 1980s onward Air Max models sat alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s as staples of urban and hip hop dress, then travelled into 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wardrobes, which is the fuller journey of Nike's own commercial rise: about 50 percent of the US athletic shoe market by 1980, a public listing, Beaverton headquarters from 1990 and the first Niketown in Portland the same year. The 90 belongs to the peak of that period. It is also one of the few Nike models people encounter first as clothing rather than as equipment, and it has held that position across more than one generation of buyers.
Construction
A layered upper combining mesh with leather and synthetic panels, which is what gives the 90 its distinctive segmented look, over a foam midsole with the visible Air unit at the heel and a rubber waffle-derived outsole beneath. That tread language traces directly back to Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron, the founding piece of Nike engineering. The panelled construction is why colourways matter so much on this model: each panel can be treated separately, so the same shoe can read as loud or as quiet purely through material choice. Style code IM4613 marks this version. The heel window is the part to protect, since a scuffed or clouded unit ages the whole shoe.
