Culture Note™
Released on 5 June 2024 and part of Nike's Air Zoom Pegasus 41 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Anthracite/White. Pegasus is the shoe Nike keeps rebuilding because it is the one most people actually run in. It is not the race shoe, not the recovery shoe and not the experiment: it is the daily trainer, which is the category the whole company started in when Bill Bowerman ruined his wife's waffle iron in Eugene trying to make a lighter sole for runners who had nothing decent to buy. Forty one versions later the brief is unchanged, and Black White is the colourway that says so. It is the least decorative option on the shelf, the one bought by people who are choosing the shoe for the running rather than for anything else.
Two ways to use it. Everyday training, four to fifteen kilometres, easy and steady, with a thin running sock and no cotton, which is the entire job of this shoe. Or as the gym and treadmill shoe for anyone doing mixed cardio, where a neutral trainer handles more than a race flat can. Black and white also passes as ordinary footwear for a commute, which a bright race colourway does not. Size up a half if you run long, since feet swell. For care, keep it out of the washing machine, pull the insole to dry after wet runs, and replace on kilometres rather than on looks because foam stops rebounding long before the upper fails.
Nike's running credibility began with Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's runner at Oregon and the first track athlete the company endorsed, whose statue stands at the Beaverton headquarters, and continued through Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix. But the daily trainer is where the company meets everyone else. Its most consequential product, the 2017 Vaporfly with ZoomX foam and a full length carbon plate, produced research showing marathon improvements of up to 4.2 percent and pushed World Athletics to write shoe rules in January 2020. The trainer is the shoe that gets you fit enough for any of that to matter.
Black over white gives you a practical split on a running shoe. The dark engineered upper hides road spray, dust and sweat marks over the course of a training block, while the white midsole makes the shape and stack of the platform visible from the side and, more usefully, shows you honestly how compressed the foam is getting. Nike's running uppers use Flywire cabling to hold the foot with minimal material and Dri-FIT fabric to move sweat off the skin, both of which matter more across a long block than across a single fast run. Expect a balanced ride rather than a soft or an aggressive one, which is why this model survives.
