Designed by Peter Moore and released on 23 May 2020 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the White/Lagoon Pulse/Black/University Gold colourway. Chunky Dunky is the SB Dunk at its most unserious and its most collectible, an ice cream brand allowed to redraw a skate shoe from the sockliner up. Cow print across the panels, tie dye where a skate shoe normally puts reinforcement, and a colour logic borrowed entirely from a pint lid rather than from a court. Nike SB exists because the Dunk turned out to be a better skate shoe than a basketball shoe, and its whole history is Nike handing the silhouette to people outside the building. Ben and Jerry's is the furthest that idea has ever travelled from sport, which is why the shoe became shorthand for the entire hype era.
This is a shoe with too much going on to be styled around. Keep everything else flat: cream carpenter trousers with a plain white tee, or loose black denim with a grey crew, so the print is the only pattern you are wearing. Cuff the hem above the collar so the cow panels actually read. Occasion wise it is daylight and weekends, not evenings. Care matters more than usual here: keep them away from rain, since dyed panels and wet leather is how a collectible turns into a story. Sizing follows Dunk convention, long through the toe, half down is common. If you plan to skate them, buy two pairs.
Nike SB has always been the part of the company that answers to a scene rather than to a sport, and it has been burned for getting that wrong. In 2005 Nike SB appropriated Minor Threat's album art for a tour flyer, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, and apologised on 27 June 2005. The lesson stuck: SB collaborations became partnerships that the partner actually shapes. A food brand redrawing the Dunk is that policy at its most cheerful, and the shoe's afterlife on resale platforms says more about how sneaker culture worked in that period than any campaign Nike could have written.
An SB Dunk build, which means the base shape you know with skate specific attention: a padded tongue and collar for board feel and impact, a Zoom Air insole under the foot, and a rubber cupsole. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the sole for cushioning, and in SB it is there to survive stair sets rather than to be looked at. The upper is where all the risk sits. Printed and dyed panels do not respond to cleaning the way plain leather does, so spot clean gently and never soak. If you actually skate them, the ollie patch area on the printed panels will abrade first and it will not come back.
