Part of On Running's Cloudultra line. This release has a mesh upper in Olive/Eclipse. Ultra is the one distance where a cushioning idea has nowhere to hide, which makes the Cloudultra the most honest test of what On has been building since 2010. Olivier Bernhard came out of Ironman racing, so long form endurance is not a category the brand approached from outside, it is the water it was born in. The Olive Eclipse colourway puts the shoe in field green and deep shadow, a pairing that belongs to long days rather than to a start line photograph. It is a serious tone for a serious use case, and it survives dirt in a way that a bright trail colourway never does, which matters when the shoe is going to see hours rather than minutes.
Two clear uses. Long effort: a lightweight vest, split shorts or a half tight and a cap, on all day mixed terrain where you need the same shoe at hour one and hour six. Off duty: olive cargo trousers, a black crew and a dark shell for hiking approaches, travel and cold weather walking, where the colourway reads outdoors rather than gym. Size a half up if you run beyond marathon distance, because feet swell late and the extra room prevents toenail damage on descents. Loosen the forefoot and keep the heel locked. Brush dry rather than washing, dry away from heat sources, and rotate pairs if you train high volume.
This is the part of On that has nothing to do with fashion. The brand sponsors the On Athletics Club under coach Dathan Ritzenhein, backs road, track and trail runners including record holder David Kilgore, and traces its own origin to a Swiss Ironman champion. Nicola Spirig raced the Cloudracer in 2012, which is the lineage a Cloudultra buyer actually inherits. The mainstream attention that arrived later, Roger Federer's shareholding in November 2019 and The Roger in July 2020, widened the audience but did not change this shoe's job. Pick this one and you are buying the endurance side of the company, the side that got Swiss engineering taken seriously before anyone treated On as a design brand.
Olive Eclipse pairs a muted green upper with dark shadow tones through the sole unit, so mud reads as weathering rather than as damage. What sits under your foot is CloudTec, foam engineered into specialised hollow geometries instead of a single cushioning compound, compressing horizontally and vertically to absorb impact and give multi directional support through the stride. Over ultra distance, that second part is the argument: your landings stop being clean well before your legs stop moving. On is Swiss designed and headquartered in Zurich, with production in Indonesia and Vietnam. After long efforts, clear the pod cavities of grit while the shoe is dry and let it air out fully before the next block of training.
