Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 1 January 2004 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has the Sail/Sheen/Straw/Medium Brown colourway. Bacon is the retailer collaboration that taught sneaker culture what a retailer collaboration could be. Built with DQM on the Air Max 90 and running under style code 310766 161, it takes the layered panel structure of the 90 and colours it like a strip of streaky bacon, brown and cream and pink in bands. The 90 was the ideal canvas for it, since the Air Max line has been the brand's most visible design platform since 1987, when Nike cut a window into the midsole and turned its cushioning into the thing you look at. The joke is small and the execution is precise, which is why it has outlasted most of the shoes released alongside it.
Warm and unusual, so keep the rest earthy. Recipe one: brown or tobacco wide leg corduroys with a cream heavy knit, the shoe finishing a monochrome warm build. Recipe two: washed light denim, a white tee and a chocolate brown work jacket, cuffing the jeans so the banded panels are fully visible. It is a daytime and weekend shoe, good for travel and casual wear, poor for wet streets since pale panels stain from the sole upward. Air Max 90s fit true to length with a slightly narrow toe box. Protect before first wear, brush dry dirt off rather than washing, use mild soap on the midsole only, and keep them out of prolonged sun because the pink sections fade first.
Nike has generally grown through ownership and partnership rather than only through collaboration, buying Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars and acquiring the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021, but the retailer collaborations are where its street credibility gets renewed. They work because the shop, not the brand, chooses the joke. Against Nike's status in urban and hip hop fashion since the 1980s, a shoe like this one signals a different kind of knowledge: not the ability to buy the most famous model, but the taste to want the strangest colourway of it. It is a collector's shoe that still works as a wardrobe piece.
Everything here depends on the panel breaks. The 90's upper is assembled from stacked overlays, a mudguard, a midfoot section, a heel counter and a collar, and Bacon assigns a different tone to each so the shoe reads as strata rather than as a print. That is a materials exercise as much as a colour one, since the browns and pinks sit on different surfaces and have to age at similar rates. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole and visible on this model at the heel, is unchanged underneath. No material breakdown is published to you here, so check the upper in hand, and expect the pale sections to be the ones that show wear first.
