Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 March 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a patent leather upper in Barely Green/Black/White. Nike has been the official on court uniform supplier to the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League since 2017, under a deal signed in June 2015 and later extended for a further twelve years, which gave the company a standing invitation to the league's biggest weekend. All Star editions are the product of that invitation: shoes built for a single event rather than a season, where the design brief is celebration instead of competition. This Dunk High SE takes the tall collared court silhouette and dresses it for the occasion, an SE build that departs from the plain two-tone template the Dunk normally lives inside. It is a shoe made for a weekend that is mostly about being watched.
Event shoes carry enough noise on their own. Recipe one: black tapered trackpants, a plain black longsleeve, and a varsity jacket, letting the SE detailing be the only pattern in the outfit. Recipe two: light grey wide-leg sweatpants stacked over the collar, a white tee and an oversized denim jacket, which keeps everything relaxed and lets the high collar peek through rather than dominate. Lace the top eyelet for a locked ankle or leave it loose for slouch. Store away from sunlight because event colourways often use dyes and prints that fade faster than standard leather, and clean spot by spot rather than soaking a mixed-material upper.
All Star weekend is where basketball performs itself, and Nike has been shaping that performance since the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the company the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Serena Williams sit in that same lineage of Nike signature athletes and endorsers, athletes whose presence at an event is itself the product. An All Star Dunk High is a souvenir of that arrangement, a shoe that exists because the league and the brand now share a calendar. It is celebratory by design rather than by accident, which is a rare permission in a range built on team discipline.
The SE designation signals a special edition upper, so expect material and detail changes rather than a straight colour swap: mixed panels, altered textures and event-specific trim across tongue, heel and collar. Structurally it stays a Dunk High, with a padded high collar above the ankle bone, stitched panelling, and a flat rubber cupsole descending from Bowerman's founding conviction that the outsole was the part worth reinventing, the obsession that took him from his wife's waffle iron to the 1972 Moon Shoe and the 1974 Waffle Trainer. The tall collar means a longer break-in and more ankle hold. Mixed-material SE uppers need to be cleaned panel by panel, since one solution rarely suits every surface on the shoe.
