    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 July 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White. There is no shorter argument for the Dunk than this one. Black on white, split down the panel lines, nothing else. The nickname attached itself because the blocking is so clean that people reached for an animal to describe it, and the shoe has been in permanent demand since. What makes it work is the same thing that made the Dunk work on hardwood: the silhouette is built out of clearly separated panels, so a two colour treatment reads as structure rather than as a paint job. Nike spent decades using this shape to say which team you supported. Stripped to black and white, it says nothing at all, which turned out to be the most wearable thing it could say.
Recipe one: black straight leg denim, a white tee, a black bomber, so the shoe's blocking is repeated in the outfit and the whole look reads as one decision. Recipe two: grey sweatpants, a black hoodie, white crew socks pulled up, the low effort version that works because black and white never clashes. Good for almost everything short of formalwear and rain. Dunks fit slightly narrow in the toe box, so go true to size and let the leather relax. The white panels are the job: wipe them with a damp cloth after every wear, use a magic sponge on the midsole, and keep the pair out of direct sunlight so it does not yellow.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models becoming staples of mainstream American youth dress before returning through the 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure wave. The black and white Dunk is what that history looks like once it has been fully absorbed into ordinary clothing: a shoe worn by people with no interest in basketball, in cities that never had a team, because it goes with everything. That total neutrality is a cultural achievement in its own right, and it is the reason this specific colourway outsells almost anything else the silhouette has done.
A low cut leather upper blocked in black and white on a flat rubber cupsole, with white carrying the base and black taking the Swoosh, the toe overlay and the heel. There is very little compression underfoot, which is what a court shoe of this generation was built for and what makes it feel firm compared to any modern trainer. Black leather panels hide scuffing well. White panels do not, and on this shoe they are the majority of the surface, so the white is the whole maintenance job. Expect a permanent crease across the toe within a fortnight and a midsole that will yellow over years if the pair is stored in light.
