Origin
Released on 18 May 2025 and part of Hoka's Bondi SR line. This release has a leather upper in Harbor Mist/Lunar Rock. Harbor Mist with Lunar Rock is a pair of soft greys, one cool and one closer to stone, and it sits on the Bondi SR, the workplace member of Hoka's most cushioned road family. This is the part of the range that exists because of what happened to the brand rather than what it planned: the cushioned road models became a default for people working twelve hour shifts on hard floors, and the company built for them. The founding logic still applies. Two former Salomon employees started Hoka in Annecy in 2009 by putting far more foam underfoot than the industry allowed, and standing all day turns out to benefit from the same idea as running downhill.
Utility
Two uses. First, on shift: scrubs or dark work trousers with a good technical sock, and the grey pair looking neutral against any uniform. Second, off duty: grey sweats or navy chinos with a plain crew, where the shoe carries over as ordinary cushioned footwear. It is built for long hours on hard floors, hospital and kitchen style environments, retail and travel, rather than for running sessions. Fit true to size and leave a thumbnail at the front, because feet swell late in a shift. Clean spills immediately, air the shoes between shifts rather than wearing the same pair daily, and replace them when the foam stops rebounding.
Influence
The healthcare adoption story is the least glamorous and most important thing that ever happened to Hoka. Nurses, technicians and clinicians on twelve hour shifts started recommending the cushioned road shoes to each other, and that word of mouth carried a French mountain running brand into general consumer awareness far faster than advertising could. Fashion arrived afterward, once the maximal silhouette started reading as running's chunky sneaker. A Bondi SR in muted greys is the shoe aimed squarely at that first audience, built around the reality of a working shift rather than around a race, which is why it looks the way it does.
Construction
The Bondi platform is the deepest cushioning Hoka builds for the road, and in a work oriented version the priority shifts from pace to hours. The house geometry, a low heel to toe drop under a rounded sole, keeps a tall stack rolling rather than slapping, which matters when you take twenty thousand small steps instead of a long steady run. The heel sits inside the midsole walls, a bucket seat approach that steadies the foot without stiff structure. Grey on grey is the most practical finish for a workplace, hiding scuffs better than white. Wipe it clean at the end of a shift rather than letting spills sit, use mild soap, and air the pair fully overnight.
