Jeremy Scott x adidas Superstar Money
Jeremy Scott x adidas Superstar Money
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 6 February 2023 as part of adidas's Superstar line. This release has a synthetic upper in Cloud White/Cloud White/Gold Metallic. Jeremy Scott is one of the designer collaborators adidas used to build the modern fashion sneaker partnership, and his work with the brand has always operated on a single principle: take the most sacred silhouette available and do something unserious to it. The Superstar is the most sacred one adidas has, launched in 1969 with a moulded rubber shell toe built to protect players' feet under the basket and reportedly worn by more than 75 percent of NBA players by 1973. Money covers that shape in currency graphics, which is exactly the kind of joke that only lands because the underlying shoe is beyond argument.
Utility
A printed Superstar is a costume unless you underplay everything else. Recipe one: plain black denim and a plain black tee, nothing branded, nothing patterned, so the currency print is the only graphic you are wearing. Recipe two: heavy grey sweats and a plain hoodie, keeping the shoe in a streetwear register where a joke print belongs. Best for evenings, parties and anywhere the reference reads. The Superstar runs long and roomy, so most wearers go down half a size. Clean printed panels with a barely damp cloth and no pressure, use a rubber eraser on the shell toe rather than solvent, and keep the pair out of prolonged sun to stop the print fading.
Influence
adidas has handed the Three Stripes to outside authors more consistently than any competitor, starting with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. That policy exists because the brand's biggest cultural moment was not its own doing: Run-DMC released My Adidas on 29 May 1986, unpaid, then had Madison Square Garden hold their shell toes in the air that July with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio watching, producing the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. Questlove called it hip hop's tipping point, and adidas has been trusting outsiders with the Superstar ever since.
Construction
The base is the Superstar's standard architecture: a leather upper, the moulded rubber shell toe cap that is the brand's most copied silhouette detail, three stitched stripes down the flank and a flat cupsole. The Money treatment puts a currency print across the upper panels, which changes the maintenance logic completely. Printed leather cannot be brushed or scrubbed the way plain leather can, since abrasion lifts the graphic before it lifts the dirt. The shell toe helps here, taking the scuffing that would otherwise land on the printed area. Expect the print to soften with creasing across the toe box, which on a shoe like this reads as wear rather than damage.
