Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 16 November 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/White/Anthracite/Black/Pure Platinum. Fear is an Air Jordan 4, which puts it inside the Tinker Hatfield era of the line. After the first two models, Nike handed the series to Hatfield, and from the Air Jordan III onward he turned a basketball shoe into a design series with a language of its own: elephant print, the Jumpman moved onto the tongue, and a willingness to make each model look nothing like the last. The 4 is the model where that language became a system, and a retro of a named colourway like Fear is the brand trading on that recognition rather than on the original's performance claims.
Two recipes. Stacked: wide black or grey trousers with the hem resting on the midsole, a plain heavy tee, so the wings and netting stay visible. Or lean: dark straight jeans with a black knit and a bomber, where the shoe supplies all the texture in the outfit. The 4 is a bulky silhouette, so keep the upper half clean and simple. Sizing is close to true with a secure midfoot. Brush the netting dry, clean the midsole with a soft brush rather than a cloth, and avoid soaking the shoe since the netting holds water for a long time.
Travis Scott is a Jordan Brand collaborator whose Cactus Jack releases have run across the Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6, and the 4 in particular became a status object in that programme. That is the modern life of this model: a Hatfield design from the eighties operating as a fashion signal, sitting inside a resale market valued around 2 billion dollars. Retro releases of named colourways are aimed at people who track that market as closely as they track the shoes. The 4 has enough presence to carry it, which is why it has never needed a redesign to stay current.
The Air Jordan 4 is built around its hardware: moulded wings at the lace throat, netting panels through the quarter for ventilation, and a visible Air unit in the heel. Nike Air cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II, and the 4 is where the technology became visual as well as functional. The result is a shoe with far more going on than the flat leather cupsole of the original model, and far more places for dirt to sit. Netting cannot be scrubbed hard, the wings collect grit at their base, and the midsole is the part that will show its age first.
