Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 31 March 2017 as part of the Air Jordan 4 line. This release has a suede upper in Cool Grey/White. KAWS is one of the named partners in Jordan Brand's collaboration programme, which runs across streetwear, luxury and music alongside Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons and Supreme. Putting an artist on the Air Jordan 4 rather than the 1 was the interesting decision: the 4 is a Tinker Hatfield era design from the run where the line became a design series with its own language, and its cage panels and eyestay wings give an artist more structure to work against than the 1's flat leather geometry. The result is a version of the model where the material choice does the talking instead of a colour block.
A soft, tonal shoe wants tailored simplicity above it. Black or charcoal wide leg trousers with a plain knit lets the surface texture register without anything competing. For a more relaxed take, grey sweatpants and a cream hoodie keeps the whole outfit in the same soft register as the upper. Avoid loud graphics and avoid other suede or napped items, which make the fit look repetitive. The 4 has a wide footprint and needs a straight hem. Protect the upper with a suitable spray before the first wear, brush gently with a dedicated nap brush, and never use water or foam cleaner on the surface.
Jordan Brand's collaboration list is what turned the catalogue from a retro programme into a design conversation. Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS on the design side, and Travis Scott with the Cactus Jack Air Jordan 1, 4 and 6 plus Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj on the music side, gave the shoes authorship beyond the house. That authorship is now a value driver in a resale market anchored by the line and valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. An artist collaboration on the 4 sits at the centre of that shift, where the name attached matters as much as the model.
The upper moves away from standard leather panelling toward a soft, uniform surface treatment across the whole shoe, so the 4's cage and wings read as relief rather than as contrast blocking. Beyond that, no material weights, stack heights or foam types are published, and nothing should be asserted about them. The practical warning is real: soft, napped or brushed uppers mark far more easily than finished leather, they cannot be scrubbed, and they lose their surface at flex points faster, so this is not a wet weather shoe.
