Origin
Part of the 1000 line. This release has a mesh upper in Incense/Black. Incense Black puts the 1000 into a smoky, almost monastic palette, a warm charcoal that reads darker in some light than others. The 1000 comes from New Balance's turn of the millennium premium running tier, when the brand used four figure numbers for its most technical work and shoes were designed to look like engineered equipment. Dressing that architecture in a near-black tone strips out the period colour and leaves the geometry, which is the most contemporary way to wear a Y2K runner. It also fits the brand's temperament. New Balance's authority has always come from fit and construction rather than from spectacle, going back to the arch supports it made in 1906.
Utility
Near-black technical shoes are the most useful pair in a rotation. Recipe one is all dark: black wide leg trousers, a charcoal knit, a black jacket, where the warm undertone stops the outfit going cold. Recipe two is contrast: cream or ecru trousers with a black tee, letting the shoe anchor the bottom of a pale outfit. It handles city grime, rain and travel better than any pale colourway in the line and works in the evening as easily as in the day. Clean the mesh with a soft brush, use mild soap sparingly on the synthetic panels, avoid harsh solvents that lift dark dye, and dry away from direct heat.
Influence
The early 2000s New Balance models were the last part of the archive to be reclaimed, and they were reclaimed because the plain models went first. The 990 family became the American dad shoe, the status-free grey runner documented on Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and once normcore and high fashion had made that plainness a design position, the brand's more technical shoes looked interesting rather than dated. Construction
Dark colourways survive or fail on texture. On a technical runner like the 1000 that means the mesh base, the layered synthetic overlays, the heel structure and the side wall block N need to differ in finish so the shoe does not turn into a silhouette, and an incense-toned black gives enough warmth to keep those differences visible. Underneath, New Balance's cushioning identity applies: ENCAP is the moulded polyurethane rim around a soft EVA core that provides stability with low compression set, and ABZORB is the softer foam and rubber blend built to disperse heel strike before it travels into the knees and hips. Choose your width fitting rather than guessing at length.
