Origin
Designed by Charlotte Lee and released on 19 March 2025 as part of New Balance's 1906L line. This release has a leather upper in Black. The 1906 name reaches back to the year William J Riley started the New Balance Arch Support Company outside Boston, making arch supports and shoe accessories rather than shoes. The L is the dressed down branch of that line, the version built to be worn like an everyday shoe rather than a training tool, and black is the colourway that commits hardest to that idea. Strip the reflective trims and technical colour blocking off a running derived silhouette and what remains is closer to a city shoe with an athletic skeleton. That is a very New Balance kind of trick: keep the engineering, remove the announcement, and let people buy it for how it feels rather than how it looks.
Utility
Black does the heavy lifting, so build around it. Recipe one: black pleated trousers with a grey or oatmeal knit, where the shoe reads as the base of a soft tailored outfit rather than as sportswear. Recipe two: dark denim, a white tee, and a black overshirt, a simple contrast where the shoe anchors the bottom of the look. Black hides scuffing but shows dust and salt marks badly, especially on textile panels, so brush after wear and use a damp cloth on the midsole edge. This runs on a running last, so size with the sock you plan to wear and use the brand's width fittings if the midfoot feels tight.
Influence
New Balance spent a century as the least fashionable name in athletic footwear and then found that plainness was the asset. The 990 became the archetypal American dad shoe, bought for comfort rather than status, and normcore reclaimed exactly that quality in the 2010s before high fashion did. The appointment of Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis as creative director of Made in USA in April 2021 formalised the shift, treating the archive as a fashion line. An all black comfort shoe on a running chassis is the most useful outcome of that whole arc: technical inheritance, no technical costume, nothing on the foot that needs explaining to anyone.
Construction
All black across the upper means the panelling reads as shadow and shape rather than contrast, so the structure of the shoe becomes something you notice up close instead of across a street. Mixed textile and synthetic surfaces sit at slightly different sheens in a single colour, which is the only visual relief on a build like this. Cushioning follows the 1906 platform's brief, ABZORB doing the impact work as New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike before it travels into the knees and hips. It is softer and lighter than ENCAP, the polyurethane rim around an EVA core used on the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive, which is the trade a comfort shoe should make.
