Origin
Released on 24 July 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Silver Metallic/Castlerock/Gold Metallic. Tech Explosion is the 1906A being honest about what it is. The number refers to 1906, the year New Balance was founded near Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, making arch supports rather than shoes, and the A is the most aggressive build on that platform, a technical runner with a sculpted, armoured upper rather than a soft retro one. This colourway breaks the shoe into contrasting technical panels so the engineering reads as the graphic, layers and overlays picked out against each other instead of blended into one tone. For a brand whose reputation was made on grey and restraint, a version that shows its own construction as decoration is a genuinely different register.
Utility
A busy shoe needs quiet clothes above it. First recipe: black technical trousers with a black shell and a plain base layer, letting the panelling be the only pattern anywhere. Second: grey sweatpants with a black hoodie, where the contrasting panels supply all the visual interest. Avoid printed or patterned trousers entirely. The structured upper sits best under a hem stopping just above the laces so the panel work stays visible. Take your usual length and adjust the width. Clean panel by panel with a damp cloth and a soft brush, keep them out of heavy rain since layered mesh absorbs water, and dry away from direct heat so the overlays do not lift.
Influence
New Balance earned its cultural standing by being unremarkable and then having that quality reclaimed. The 990 family became the archetypal American dad shoe worn for comfort rather than status, documented on Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore and then high fashion turned that plainness into a design position in the 2010s. The 1906 line arrived after that reappraisal, into a market that already read New Balance's runners as design objects, a position the brand formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. A loud technical colourway only works because the plain ones came first.
Construction
A heavily layered upper of engineered mesh with synthetic and suede overlays, panelled so each structural piece sits at a visibly different depth, with the block N built into the architecture rather than applied to it. Underneath is New Balance's ABZORB cushioning, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, sitting under a sculpted runner platform with a rubber outsole cut for pavement grip. ABZORB is softer and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane rim and EVA core that supports the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive. Multi panel uppers do not stretch evenly, so choose the width fitting rather than adding length.
