New Balance 1906R Black Grey
New Balance 1906R Black Grey
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Released on 12 August 2023 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Grey. The 1906R takes its number from the year the company began. New Balance was founded in 1906 near Boston by William J Riley as the New Balance Arch Support Company, making arch supports and shoe accessories rather than shoes at all, and naming a technical runner after that year is the brand pointing at the part of its history nobody else can copy. The R is the retro leaning version of the platform, a mid 2000s style performance runner with sculpted panelling and a visible cushioning system. Black Grey is the colourway that lets the engineering speak, black through the body and grey lifting the structural panels, so the shape is legible without any colour doing the work.
Utility
Black with grey is the workhorse configuration, so use it where a coloured shoe would be a liability. First recipe: black tapered trousers, a grey technical shell and a black base layer, the shoe reading as part of the same system. Second: dark straight jeans with a grey crewneck and a black overcoat, letting the sculpted midsole be the only visible detail. The structured upper holds shape best with a hem that stops just above the laces. Take your usual length and adjust the width. Wipe with a damp cloth, brush the mesh dry to lift dust which shows grey against black, and keep them out of prolonged rain since layered mesh holds water.
Influence
New Balance's performance runners have always led a second life outside running, which is how the brand became culturally significant without trying. The 990 family turned into the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status by documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and that plainness was reclaimed as a design position in the 2010s. The 1906 line arrived after the reappraisal, when the brand was already treating its archive as a fashion line, a shift formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. Black and grey is how the shoe gets worn daily rather than displayed.
Construction
A layered upper of engineered mesh with synthetic and suede overlays, black carrying the base while grey picks out the structural panels and the block N. Underneath New Balance uses ABZORB, its proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, sitting under a sculpted runner platform with a rubber outsole cut for grip. ABZORB is softer and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane rim and EVA core that supports the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive, so this rides plush rather than planted. The layered overlays do not stretch, so take the width fitting that matches your foot rather than adding length.
