Origin
Released on 1 March 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Dawn Glow/Tamarind/Blue Laguna. The 1906R is New Balance mining its own two thousands technical catalogue, the period when running shoes were designed to look engineered rather than friendly, and bringing that back as a lifestyle silhouette. Dawn Glow Tamarind names its own mood: a warm, low sun palette of soft glow tones against a burnt orange brown, which is a long way from the grey the brand is known for. That contrast is the point. New Balance spent decades as the sensible option, and its archive shoes only became fashion once the plainness was reclaimed in the 2010s, at which point warm and strange colourways became a way of showing you knew the shape well enough to recolour it.
Utility
Build around the warmth: brown or tobacco corduroy trousers, a cream knit, and a tan or rust outer layer, so the tamarind reads as part of a considered autumn palette. The second recipe strips it back, black or deep charcoal trousers with a plain black tee, letting the glow tones be the only warmth in the outfit. This is a walking shoe for long unstructured days, not a training shoe. Warm colours show dirt as dullness rather than as marks, so brush the suede regularly and clean early. New Balance's cultural standing was built accidentally, by people who wore the shoes for comfort rather than image, and only later formalised. The 990 line became the archetypal American dad shoe and had documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff. Once normcore and high fashion turned that plainness into a design position, the technical two thousands models like the 1906R became the next thing to excavate. The brand's collaboration programme has always favoured designers and independents over mass celebrity, from Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 to Action Bronson across several models, and warm inline colourways like this one are the general release version of that sensibility.
Construction
The upper is the standard 1906R layering of engineered mesh with synthetic overlays and suede, a busy panelled build where the tamarind tones sit on the overlays and the lighter glow shades run through the base. Underfoot the platform uses ABZORB, New Balance's proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, which disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, and which is plusher and lighter than the polyurethane and EVA structure of ENCAP. The ride is soft and forgiving rather than stiff and supportive. Multiple width fittings are the brand's oldest technical promise, inherited from the arch support business, so pick the width that matches your foot instead of sizing up for volume.
