Released on 17 December 2022 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Exuberant Pink/Bleach Blue. The Neon Nights Pack takes the 1906R somewhere the brand's reputation does not usually go. The number is the founding year: New Balance began in 1906 near Boston as the New Balance Arch Support Company, making arch supports rather than shoes, and the 1906R is the retro leaning build on that platform, a mid 2000s style performance runner with sculpted panelling and visible cushioning. Dressing it in neon accents against a dark base is a pack concept rather than a heritage one, built around the idea of a shoe seen under artificial light. It only works because the underlying shoe is genuinely technical, so the brightness reads as function borrowed for style rather than as decoration.
Utility
Neon accents need a dark, plain field to work against. First recipe: black technical trousers with a black shell jacket, letting the accents be the only colour in the outfit. Second: dark washed denim with a grey hoodie, where the neon reads as a deliberate flash rather than a scheme. Avoid other brights entirely. The structured upper sits best under a hem stopping just above the laces so the panelling stays visible. Take your usual length and adjust the width fitting. Wipe the neon panels early since bright synthetics grey with dust, brush the mesh dry, and keep them out of heavy rain because layered mesh holds water.
Influence
Bright running colourways exist because of the part of New Balance most people never see. The brand has stayed anchored in the amateur running community rather than in celebrity sport, from the Trackster of 1960 spreading through YMCA fitness programmes and college cross country teams to its sponsorship of New York Road Runners, where being visible at dawn or after dark is a practical concern. The 1906 line arrived once fashion had already reclaimed the brand's plainness as a design position, a shift formalised when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis became creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. Neon on a technical runner sits between those two worlds.
Construction
A layered upper of engineered mesh with synthetic and suede overlays, the darker base carrying the structure while neon picks out panels, trim and the block N so the architecture is legible at a glance. Underneath is New Balance's ABZORB cushioning, its proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend, engineered to disperse heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, sitting under a sculpted runner platform with a rubber outsole cut for pavement grip. ABZORB is softer and lighter than the ENCAP polyurethane rim and EVA core beneath the 990 and 574, and less structurally supportive. Layered overlays do not stretch, so choose width rather than adding length.
