Origin
Released on 1 May 2024 and part of New Balance's 550 line. This release has a leather upper in Deep Lichen Green/Pistachio Butter. Deep Lichen Green in a monochromatic pack is a specific proposition: one colour, top to bottom, including the parts a shoe normally keeps white. On the 550, a flat court derived silhouette that usually depends on contrast between the upper and the foxing, going tonal changes the shoe completely, flattening it into a single object and making the shape rather than the branding do the talking. That suits this brand. New Balance was built on function and quietness, an arch support company founded near Boston in 1906 that became famous for a grey running shoe, and a full tonal green is the modern version of not wanting to be looked at too hard. Utility
Two recipes. Black wide leg trousers with a charcoal knit lets the green sit as the only colour in an otherwise dark outfit, which is the sharpest way to run a tonal shoe. Construction
Monochrome removes the shoe's usual contrast cues, so everything falls to texture and shadow. On this build the panel edges, the stitch lines and the perforations become the only visual information, which is why tonal packs live or die on finish quality. A mid to deep green is also the friendliest tonal choice going, since it hides scuffs on the foxing that would be glaring on a white sole. Underneath, the house principle has been to split structure from shock absorption since ENCAP arrived with the 995 in 1986, a polyurethane rim wrapped around a soft foam core, and on a court last that produces firmness rather than plushness. Expect a snug midfoot and a low, stable stance.
