New Balance Salehe Bembury x 1000 Fog Be The Cloud
New Balance Salehe Bembury x 1000 Fog Be The Cloud
Culture Note™
Origin
Released on 5 September 2025 and part of the 1000 line. This release has a leather upper in Rich Blue/Vibrant Yellow/Olive. The 1000 is one of the deeper numbers in New Balance's running archive, the kind of shape most brands would leave in storage, and handing it to Salehe Bembury is exactly why it came back out. Fog with Be The Cloud in the name sets the tone: soft, atmospheric, more mood than colourway. New Balance's collaboration programme has always run on designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, with named partners including British designer Paul Smith on a 576 released in June 2018 and Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis, who was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. A designer led revival of a forgotten runner is the house method, not an exception.
Utility
A foggy neutral works best against slightly heavier fabrics. Recipe one: washed grey or stone canvas trousers with a cream knit, so the whole outfit sits inside the same soft palette and the sole shape provides the structure. Recipe two: black cargos with a white tee and a grey overshirt, using the shoe as a light break at the bottom of a dark look. Keep the hem cropped so the sole is visible, since the silhouette is the reason this pair exists. Care is strict: protector spray before wearing, dry brush only, no rain, and a midsole eraser on the foxing before grey creeps into the pale upper.
Influence
New Balance is unusual in that its collaborators tend to be builders rather than faces. Teddy Santis went from collaborator to creative director of Made in USA, Paul Smith worked on a 576, and Action Bronson has produced multiple designs including a 990v6 Baklava. That pattern means a collaboration here reads as an actual design brief rather than a licensing exercise, and it is why the brand can afford to revive an obscure archive runner instead of another 990. The cultural argument is simple: New Balance became fashionable by being plain, so the most interesting way to keep it interesting is to give plain shapes to people with strong personal taste.
Construction
This is a running chassis dressed in a hazy, low contrast palette, where the panelling is defined by shifts in tone and texture rather than by hard colour breaks. That approach puts pressure on the materials: layered mesh and suede have to carry the whole design when nothing is competing for attention. Cushioning follows the New Balance archive playbook, with ABZORB, the proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend built to disperse heel strike impact before it climbs into the knees and hips, doing the comfort work rather than the firmer polyurethane and EVA structure of ENCAP. Pale, fog toned uppers need sealing before the first wear, since light suede holds every mark it takes and will not brush clean once set.
