Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 7 December 2017 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has the White/Gold colourway. This is the Air Force 1 turned into a trophy. Built around Cristiano Ronaldo, the golden patchwork treatment covers the low top in mixed panels and metallic gold detailing, which is a long way from the plain white basketball shoe the silhouette started as. Football is a major part of Nike's sports footprint, and the brand has a history of building product and film around individual players: its advertising has featured Ronaldinho, notably the 2005 Touch of Gold film. Putting a footballer's signature treatment on a basketball shoe only works because the Air Force 1 stopped belonging to basketball decades ago, once it became one of the staple Nike models in mainstream American dress from the 1980s onward.
A gold patchwork shoe cannot share the spotlight, so build around it. Wear it with black tapered trousers and a plain black tee so the metallic reads as jewellery, or go full sport casual with black track pants, a white tee and a bomber, letting the panels do all the work. Occasion is going out and statement wear rather than daily commuting, and definitely not sport. AF1s fit generously, so most people take a half size down. Keep it away from rain, since mixed panels and metallic finishes mark permanently. Clean with a barely damp microfibre cloth, never a stiff brush on the gold, and store it out of direct light.
Nike has built its identity on individual athletes since Steve Prefontaine and Ilie Nastase, then made the model global with Michael Jordan from 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon campaigns that turned a basketball shoe into a cultural object. Football gave Nike a different route into the same idea, and the brand's advertising has leaned on player mythology, as with the 2005 Touch of Gold film featuring Ronaldinho. A gold patchwork Air Force 1 built around a footballer is the logical end of that approach: the athlete becomes the design language, and the shoe stops being sportswear and becomes memorabilia you can wear outdoors.
The AF1 Low's architecture is unchanged underneath the decoration: a thick stacked midsole, a wide flat outsole and a structured upper with perforations across the toe. What this version adds is patchwork, panels of contrasting materials and gold accents that turn the shoe's seams into the main event. Nike Air, the sealed pressurised unit the brand has used in midsoles since 1987, sits inside doing the cushioning work regardless of what the upper looks like. Expect a heavy, roomy shoe with a firm and very flat ride. Mixed material panels age at different rates, so this pair needs more careful cleaning than a single material AF1, and metallic detailing should never be scrubbed hard.
