Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 5 March 2020 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper. The Air Force 1 has been public property since the 1980s, when it became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion and then a staple of mainstream American youth dress, which means every collaborator who touches it inherits a shoe nobody is allowed to change. This Supreme pair goes all black, the most disciplined answer available. Removing colour removes the last thing a collaborator could hide behind, leaving material, proportion and whatever branding is applied. For a company that began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, selling imported running shoes out of Phil Knight's car, the idea that its most famous shoe now works best with nothing on it is a strange kind of arrival.
All-black leather sneakers are the most useful shoe you can own and the easiest to waste. Recipe one: black tailored wide-leg trousers, a black fine-gauge knit and a long black coat, a tonal column where the cupsole adds weight without breaking the line. Recipe two: raw indigo denim, a grey sweatshirt and a black bomber, using the shoe to anchor a casual outfit at the bottom. Air Force 1s run about half a size large, so size down half. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, condition occasionally to stop the leather drying at the crease, keep whitening products away entirely, and use trees so the toe box holds its shape.
Nike's most durable cultural products are the ones it gave up control of, from court shoes that became hip hop uniform to the SB line whose 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology from Nike. Streetwear collaborations on the Air Force 1 sit in that lineage, annotating a shoe rather than redesigning it. Black is the version those partnerships reach for when they want longevity instead of attention: no colourway to date, no palette to explain, nothing that will look like a specific moment in five years. It is the least nostalgic shoe in this entire list.
Black on black means every element sits in one tone, so the shoe is judged on hide quality and panel geometry rather than on contrast. Collaborator builds typically upgrade the leather and place branding at the heel, tongue or lace dubrae, and in a single tone those marks read as embossing rather than as graphics. The chassis is the standard Air Force 1 Low: a thick rubber cupsole with a forefoot pivot circle, a moulded padded collar, and Nike Air sealed inside the midsole as a pressurised gas unit, hidden rather than exposed the way it became on the 1987 Air Max. Black leather ages by dulling rather than by yellowing, which is a far easier way to grow old.
