Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 1 February 2024 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a canvas upper in Sea Glass/Sea Glass/Black/Chlorophyll/Earthsea Glass. Swapping the Air Force 1's leather for canvas changes the shoe more than any colourway can. The model is normally a heavy, structured, glossy object, and in a sustainable canvas make up it becomes soft, matte and light, closer to a summer shoe than to the basketball silhouette it descends from. Sea Glass is the correct name for the palette: pale, cooled, slightly washed out, the colour of something the water has already worked on. This is Nike using its most recognisable shape to make an argument about material, which is the only way an argument about material ever reaches a large audience.
Pale canvas is a warm weather shoe and behaves best in a light palette. Try ecru linen trousers with a white shirt, or washed light denim with a pale blue tee, so the shoe sits inside the outfit rather than under it. For contrast, navy chinos with a white crew, which makes the sea glass tone read as deliberate. Keep them away from rain and dark denim, since canvas absorbs both water marks and dye transfer. Air Force 1s run large, so a half size down is common. Wash the laces separately rather than trying to clean them on the shoe.
Nike's materials work runs from Nike Grind, which recycles manufacturing scrap and worn shoes back into new product and surfaces, to a 2021 partnership with Newlight Technologies on AirCarbon bioplastic. Most of it is invisible, which is the problem: a technology nobody can see does not change behaviour. Putting and alternative materials on the Air Force 1, a shoe that became a staple of mainstream American dress alongside Air Jordans and Air Max, is how the company gets that work in front of people who were never going to read a sustainability report.
A canvas upper on the Air Force 1 chassis, over a thick moulded midsole with Nike Air sealed inside it, a pressurised gas unit that has carried this model's cushioning since long before it became a wardrobe staple. Canvas is a different ownership proposition to leather: it is lighter and more breathable, it creases softly instead of cracking, and it absorbs stains rather than resisting them. Treat it like clothing. Use a fabric protector before the first wear, brush dry, spot clean with minimal water, and never machine wash, because the adhesive and the Air unit do not benefit. Expect a break in period of almost nothing.
