    Culture Note™

Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 9 June 2022 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Summit White/White/White. The Air Force 1 has been in continuous production long enough that changing its proportions counts as a design intervention. PLT.AF.ORM is Nike's platform reading of it, the upper kept recognisable and the sole raised into something with real height and a sculpted, layered edge. That is a specific kind of confidence: taking a silhouette so entrenched that most people could draw it from memory and altering the one dimension nobody expected. Nike could do this because by 1980 it already held roughly half the US athletic shoe market, and because the AF1 became a fixture of American dress rather than a seasonal product. You only get to remodel a monument you already own.
Height is the whole feature, so use it. Recipe one: a long straight leg trouser or wide jean that just clears the platform, a fitted top, a cropped jacket, letting the shoe lengthen the line rather than interrupt it. Recipe two: a midi skirt or dress with white socks, where the raised sole reads as deliberate proportion play instead of a sneaker compromise. Good for daytime and city wear, awkward on uneven ground because the platform reduces flex and ankle feel. AF1s run large, so consider a half size down. Clean the leather with a damp cloth, treat the midsole edges as the surface that scuffs first, and keep it out of sunlight to slow yellowing.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Force 1s sitting alongside Air Jordans and Air Max models as staples of mainstream American youth dress, then reappearing in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The AF1 in particular crossed over so completely that it stopped being read as a basketball shoe at all. A platform version belongs to the current chapter of that story, where the silhouette is treated as a fashion object with its own proportions to play with, and where the audience buying it has no relationship to the sport the shoe came from.
A low cut Air Force 1 upper mounted on a raised, sculpted platform midsole with a segmented, stacked edge that gives the shoe its height and its profile. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole and the company's cushioning platform since the 1987 Air Max made it visible, sits underneath as it does on the standard shoe. The platform changes how you walk in it: the added height raises your centre of gravity and stiffens the roll through the step, so it feels more planted and less flexible than a standard AF1. The upper is the familiar panelled leather, which creases at the toe permanently and needs the same maintenance the original always has.
