Origin
Marathon racing shoes changed when Nike put a full length carbon fibre plate on top of ZoomX, its altered Pebax foam, and launched the Vaporfly in 2017. Peer research found the platform could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, a number large enough to force the sport's rulebook open. The Alphafly is the maximal expression of that thinking, and this edition carries the It's Just The Start name in tribute to Eliud Kipchoge. The line traces directly back to the founding obsession at Nike, Bill Bowerman's refusal to accept the weight of the shoes his runners were given, which sent him to his wife's waffle iron in search of something lighter. This is that argument taken as far as materials currently allow.
Utility
Two uses, both narrow. First, race day: half and full marathons, where the plate and the foam do what they were designed to do and the thin upper stays out of the way. Second, a small number of sharpening sessions before a race, so your legs learn the geometry, since running a marathon in a shoe you have not adapted to is how people injure themselves. Do not use these for daily mileage, they wear out and they do not build strength. Size true with a thumbnail of room, race in thin socks, keep them off gravel and wet camber, air them out after every use, and never machine wash a plated racing shoe.
Influence
Nike's running credibility begins with track. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, was the brand's first track endorser and remains its symbol of running as attitude rather than as sport, with a statue at Nike headquarters. The brand went on to sponsor Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix, and its voice was fixed by Just Do It, whose first film in 1988 starred an 80 year old runner rather than a champion. Marathon shoes like this one are where that history becomes a laboratory: the fastest equipment the company knows how to build, released to anyone willing to pay, because the rules now require exactly that.
Construction
This is a racing platform, not a training shoe. The build pairs a very light responsive foam with a rigid plate running the length of the shoe, designed to return energy into each stride rather than absorb it, and the upper is cut thin enough that it does almost nothing except hold the foot in place. Nike's rule environment here is public: on 31 January 2020 World Athletics limited sole thickness to 40mm and permitted one rigid plate, and required shoes to be available at open retail for four months, and compliant race models remain legal to compete in. In wear, that means a shoe with a distinct, slightly unstable feel at slow paces that only makes sense once you are actually racing.
