Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 November 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Burgundy Crush/Burgundy Crush/Sail. The Dunk High is the original shape, the version that came out of a basketball brief before the low collar took over the model's public identity. It has always been the harder sell and the better looking shoe, a high top that manages not to look like sportswear because the collar sits lower than a true basketball high. Burgundy Crush is a deep, wine leaning red, which is the most adult direction a Dunk colour story can go: dark enough to wear like a leather shoe, saturated enough to still be a Dunk. Style code DD1869 601. Against white panels and a white midsole, it reads closer to a varsity colour than a fashion one.
Burgundy is a neutral if you treat it like one. First: mid grey wide leg trousers with a cropped hem so the high collar is fully visible, a cream knit, and the red as the only warm note. Second: black straight leg jeans with a single cuff, a black tee and a tan jacket, where the burgundy bridges the black and the tan. It suits autumn and winter dressing far better than summer. Dunks fit narrow, so size up half if your foot is wide, and expect the collar to feel stiff for the first few wears. Condition the leather twice a year, brush rather than soak, and use a foam eraser on the midsole instead of bleach.
The Dunk's original colour programme was built around institutional colours, which is why saturated single tones against white still feel native to the model rather than applied to it. The shoe then went through skateboarding, where Nike SB rebuilt it and, in 2005, learned the limits of borrowing culture when it appropriated Minor Threat album art and apologised publicly. That collision is part of the Dunk's identity. From the 1980s onward Nike was already a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Dunk arrived in that conversation later than the Air Force 1 but ended up more collected than almost anything else the company makes.
A Dunk High is built the same way as the low with more upper: panelled leather, a padded collar that wraps the ankle, a rubber cupsole and a flat grippy outsole from the original court brief. The extra height changes the fit more than people expect, since lacing to the top locks the ankle and lacing loose lets the collar flop open, and both are legitimate ways to wear it. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole, is the house cushioning platform, though nobody buys a Dunk for the ride. Deep red leather is prone to showing scuffs as pale marks, so condition it regularly rather than cleaning it aggressively.
