    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 July 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Summit White/Baltic Blue/Deep Royal Blue/Light Silver. Baltic Blue lands on a high top that carries Nike's court instincts rather than its track ones. The company behind it began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports, a small Oregon operation importing Onitsuka Tiger and selling shoes out of Phil Knight's car at track meets, and it only took the Nike name in 1972 once Bill Bowerman's lighter sole experiments gave it something of its own to sell. The Swoosh that Carolyn Davidson drew, first used in June 1971, is the reason this SE exists in the shape it does. The Split treatment cuts the upper into two contrasting halves so the mark reads twice across the panels, and Baltic Blue against pale off white gives that trick a cold, deliberate register instead of a loud one.
Two ways to wear it. First, raw indigo denim cuffed to stop just above the collar, a heavy grey sweatshirt and a black jacket, letting Baltic Blue be the only saturated thing in the outfit. Second, wide cream trousers, a white tee and a navy overshirt, which pulls the off white panels forward and treats the blue as a base note. A Dunk High sits close to true to size with a snug midfoot that eases after a few wears, so go true unless you want room for thick socks. Lace to the top eyelet if you want the collar to stand. Wipe the upper down after wear, use mild soap and a soft brush on the pale panels rather than anything abrasive, and keep them off wet streets.
Nike's cultural weight was not built on running alone. The Michael Jordan signing of 1984, and the Spike Lee directed advertising in which Lee played Mars Blackmon, made the brand the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. From the 1980s onward Nike high tops became a status marker in urban and hip hop dress before folding into the casual and athleisure wardrobes that followed. A Dunk High in a two tone colourway inherits that lineage directly. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, gave Nike a voice that carried well past sport, which is why a shoe like this reads as a cultural object rather than only as footwear.
The Split build is the whole idea. The upper is divided into contrasting panels so the seams and the Swoosh line up as graphic elements rather than as afterthoughts, which is why the colour break sits exactly where the overlays do. The high collar packs padding around the ankle and changes how the shoe holds you: it wants to be laced through the top eyelets, because crushed down the silhouette loses its structure. Underneath, Nike's outsole thinking traces back to Bowerman pouring rubber into his wife's waffle iron in search of grip without weight, and that pursuit still governs how a court sole gets cut and flexed. Style code DZ2535 100 is your check that the pair in front of you is this Baltic Blue execution.
