Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 July 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a suede upper in Sail/Light Iron Ore/Light Smoke Grey/University Blue. Athletic Department is a nod to where the Dunk actually came from. The model was built as college basketball equipment, sold in team colours so that university programmes could dress the same from top to bottom, and that campus origin is the reason its two panel colour blocking exists at all. A themed pair like this one turns that history into the design brief, borrowing the visual language of varsity kit rooms, felt lettering and equipment tags. Nike had the standing to supply those programmes because by 1980 it held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and had gone public. The Dunk is what that market position looked like on a college court.
First: mid wash straight leg denim with a heavyweight collegiate sweat and white socks, the most literal reading and the one the colourway is built for. Second: charcoal trousers with a plain knit polo, dressing the theme down so the shoe reads as texture rather than costume, which suits anyone who does not want to look like a mascot. Good for campus, weekends and casual offices. Dunk lasts are slightly narrow across the toe, so try true to size and go half up with thick socks. Clean leather with mild soap on a damp cloth, dry brush any fabric or felt detailing rather than scrubbing it, and use shoe trees to limit toe creasing.
The Dunk's route from college equipment to cultural object went through skateboarding and then through a general release calendar built on limited colourways, which is a very different life from the one it was designed for. It rode the same wave that saw Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models become status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s onward, then staples of mainstream American youth dress. Varsity themed pairs are the model looking backwards at its own beginning, which is a comfortable place for it to sit. Nike has always sold sport as identity, an argument formalised when Just Do It arrived in 1988.
Expect the Dunk Low's familiar two panel leather upper with the theme carried in applied detailing, contrast stitching and material changes rather than in a wild base colour, which is how varsity references usually work on this silhouette. The flat court outsole with its forefoot pivot circle is unchanged from the model's basketball brief, and cushioning comes from a foam midsole and sockliner rather than a visible Air unit, because the Dunk predates the 1987 Air Max that made pressurised Nike Air a design feature. The Swoosh reinforces the sidewall it crosses, doing structural work as well as branding. Applied felt or fabric details are the first thing to fray, so keep them dry.
